But the truth is, no. AD: I used to do a lot of push-ups, sit- ups, and all that to keep myself feeling healthy, but I was still getting drained. AD: I picked up a feel for it by watching drummers, looking in books and practicing it. So I went to do my first solo record with him. But Im wondering if you felt that way. The manager sent me apiece of legal paper with about ten different things on it, written out by hand, and said, "Sign it." It was a bit of a learning curve, for me. I used a small, jazz Ludwig kit for the Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka aibums-a little 20" bass, an 8 x 12 tom-tom, and a pair of 14 x 14 floor toms. People trying to sell hot dogs with your music. Do you think that dynamic was set up from the beginning? Fine. Now I wanna go home for a while., **As a singer, were you dealing with a different set of demands? _[laughs] _Okay? On one song he gave me a chart that was all marching-type drumming-roll after roll, flams, drags, ruffs-and it was great. And then, yknow, after that, hes talking about not cracking the stone. Oh he is one of my favorite drummers on the planet. We did get a little bit trendy in spots, we all occasionally got a bit funny with our dressing, but we did not follow the New Wave thing, or the punk thing. AD: R&B was happening, and traditional jazz. Every guy in the band would take about a 1O-chorus solo on each tune. Then the band's ego got too much for me to cope with and I had to dump them. I was always on the edge of being what I expected out of myself, and what people wanted me to be, and I never wanted to settle for anything short of what it should be. Afterbeing with them for 3 years, I'm still having a good time. And not until it really took off, I think, did that question really get answered. Then It Changed My Life. I went down there and sat in with him, and boy, it was horrible! AD: Ludwig. Anything worth anything has got to be that way. We really couldn't hear them a lot of the time. He started his professional career in Derry Wilkie and the Pressmen in 1963. He went to bat for me in a huge way. That was pretty interesting and he was a great help. Yeah. I was supposed to talk to him for thirty minutes, but he had a lot to sayabout how he joined the band, about why he left, and about the pride he still takes in the work they did togetherand we ended up talking for almost two hours. So I did. After the tour, they got back in touch and asked me about being in the band, because Eric had unfortunately passed on. Blues and progressive stuff was where I was at, yknow? To the average person, they just don t like drum solos. I ended up going to Bowie's party after Lou's session, and Bowie asked me if I'd like to join him. Once I lock into a song, the rest of the band comes together fast, so I've decided that it's my job to learn the arrangement and then just play it. I walk onstage. Dont go out and play these songs with someone else and crack the stone. I only sing in the shower! You can't have million-note fills allover the place be- cause people can't hear them, they can't understand it, and so they won't want to buy it. There was no ad-lib with them.
