Never, in all my angsty teen years of listening to the Goo Goo Dolls, did I expect the post-grunge band — known for their heart-ripping “Iris” — to release a Christmas album. This is the Goo Goo Dolls first ever Christmas record and I love it, John Rzeznik and Robby Takac have excelled, this record really encapsulates the season perfectly. And yes, the most recent Goo Goo Dolls output has been largely uninspiring. The release of some self-written, original Christmas tracks with a mixture of your favourite Christmas hits, Goo Goo Dolls have sprinkled their magic Goo Goo stamp all over it, ready to ignite the excitement that you once felt for Christmas all over again. When you think of a typical Christmas song, this is the sound you think of. Originating from Buffalo, New York, The Goo Goo Dolls (known as The Goo’s by fans) original sound, was a mix of post-grunge and alternative rock. I would say that you should watch it and if you like it, you’ll probably enjoy the album too, but that would not be entirely fair to the Goo Goo Dolls or to this album. And never, in all my years of listening to Christmas music way too early in the season (we’re talking July, folks), did I think such an album would be good. Opening with ‘It’s Christmas All Over’, this really sets the tone for the entire album. With the bands’ live shows wiped out due to the ongoing global pandemic, Goo Goo Dolls decided to record a festive album, a project that frontman Johnny Rzeznik told ABC News Radio he had “great fun” putting together. Unfortunately, we don’t actually know if that song will pass his lips, because the details of the Goo Goo Dolls’ forthcoming holiday album have yet to be revealed.
